(Tom, forgive me for being off-topic on coupers-tech. Perhaps you'll agree this advice could be valuable to the members there.)
Yes indeed. I was on the phone with someone in New York on Madison Avenue
discussing his company's e-mail being shut down by this virus when all of
our
supervisors started running around to each person saying
DELETE THE "I LOVE YOU" E-MAIL! Don't open it - it's a VIRUS!
I hope you'll all forgive me for posting this again. To those of us in the
business, it's old news but most of you normal people don't read 50 pages
of
computer stuff a week.
NEVER open an executable attachment that YOU haven't PRE-arranged to have
sent
to you! Executable attachments have suffixes of ".exe" or ".com" in
particular.
Even if you pre-arranged to have an executable file sent to you, be
suspicious
and just save it to the hard drive and sic your virus checker on it.
If you haven't done so already, make sure you shut off the Windows or
Office
ability to automatically run 'macros' in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Exel
and
files other Microsoft Office programs.
Files downloaded from trusted sites on the World Wide Web are sort of
trustworthy. National companies make sure their files are virus checked
before
they're posted. But, be aware that viruses DO occasionally get into even
these
checked files. Download the file to the hard drive and sic your virus
checker
on it.
Have a good virus checker (about $35) and update the virus signatures
weekly!
These simple suggestions may not be 100% effective but they are pretty
good.
I've not 'caught' a virus on my computer in 15 years of active online
communications.
Finally, we all need to remember. The From: person whose name is on the
e-mail
of a virus you receive didn't really send it. The virus sent itself. By
cooperating, we can help protect each other.
Thanks to those who posted the early warning of this virus here. This one
was
real. Try to check warnings at
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html
before passing them on to the list, though.
