If you can easily reach the antenna connection, the simplest way would
probably be through substitution. Purchase a made-up cable (remember
that it has to be "50 ohm," not "75 ohm") and connect the radio to the
antenna with it. If the setup still doesn't work, the antenna is the
only item left. While a poor connection between the shell of the
antenna's connector and the skin could be a factor, it is unlikely to
cause very bad operation.  If you haven't replaced the cable in 15-20
years, now's the time to do it, so purchase one of the correct length.
Can you make a new cable successfully yourself? Probably not if you have
to ask how to test it.
