My wife & I had the pleasure of having dinner with Lynn and g-son Joel last night. There are those who fly airplanes, those who are pilots, and then there are aviators. Lynn is surely one of the latter. I wish I had had more time to visit with him. A couple of hours only scratched the surface of a fellow who in addition to flying a 'coupe has flown one of almost every type aircraft as a Navy Test Pilot. Joel is a handsome, polite and respectful young man who will someday have the memory of a unique experience few ever have. I hope we have the opportunity to meet and visit again.
And now the "rest of the story". We waved goodbye to Lynn and Joel and took off just as the sun was setting behind the mountain range to the west of Silver City. As we crossed I-10 to the west of Deming what had looked from a distance like haze, turned out to be a raging dust storm stretching from the SW and obliterating Deming. Now, unlike most of you humidity laden flat landers, we normally enjoy visibility exceeding 75 miles. I continued to fly south under clear and calm conditions maintaining about 5 mile separation from what looked like a rain wall. When I got within 10 miles of our little back yard mountain range and couldn't even see it's outline in the fading light, I chose to divert 50 miles west to Lordsburg, one of those little airports that "gives" you a car so you can go to town and get a motel. We chugged home this morning in calm and clear conditions with another of those little adventures to remember where things didn't quite go as planned. My neighbor said the visibility in blowing dust last night was so bad he couldn't see halfway down the runway. Tonight is another of those gorgeous evenings here in the Desert Southwest, more the norm.
