Jim,

    We paint aluminum all the time in my business.  We use a good two part
epoxy
primer.  Normally it's green in color.  It's not zinc chromate.  As long
as the
aluminum is clean, and you rough it up really good, the stuff sticks like
glue.  If
you miss a spot in your prep, and don't clean/rough it up, the stuff will
flake
off.  Aluminum is tough to paint, but if you do it right, you should have
no
problem.  By the way, my personal experience tells me not to use the base
coat /
clear coat type paints.  Too many problems with the clear coat flaking
off.  There
are great acrylic enamel products out there that will work very well.  A
word of
warning.  If you want a metallic finish in the paint, the acrylic enamel
will fade
in time, so I don't recommend the metallic stuff.
