Coupers; I skipped #14 because I inadvertently sent two # 13's.
We got a late start this AM because I had not made arrangements to
leave
the rental car at the airport. The visibility was excellent as we left
Oakdale, CA and headed for Klamath Falls, OR via Orville CA. WE flew alongthe East side of the valley and could easily see everything in the valley as well as the mountains on the other side. The headwind component was over 20 mph, so it took us 2 hours to get to Orville. There was a 415-C sitting on the ramp. It had a canopy cover and the tires were not flat, but it looked like it had not flown in quite a while (N3437H). Mr. Pearson who is on the EOC roster as the owner did not have his phone # listed. Oh by the way, I had a real nice visit with David Smoler on Sunday, AM. He flew over to Oakdale, and we talked Coupes, etc., for an hour. Thanks David, I really appreciate you taking the time to come and talk to me. Out of Orville, we flew to Redding and then up the pass NNE under the clouds and into the Klamath Falls basin. It was kind of bumpy, moderate turbulence, there for about 45 minutes, but we were able to make it OK. After we got the rental car, which turned out to be a Ford Expedition, because they did not have any intermediate size cars, we headed back into CA to the Lava Beds National Monument. Joel picked this one because of the Indian history where about 60 Indians held off over 600 troops for almost 6 months. Eventually the Colonel in charge was fired, and a terrific raid cut off the Indians water supply which forced an end to the standoff. However, Joel says that the highlight of the day was the caves we visited. We looked at and climbed in 6 of the several different caves that are a part of the Lava Beds. We also took a look at the Big Crater. I found the 150 plus mile visibility absolutely wonderful. Tomorrow will be another long day of driving while we go over to look at the Oregon Caves National Monument.
