Coupers; We got a late start this morning, but I hoped that the tailwind would make up for it. Unfortunately, we spent too much time at Wall Drug, so that the 2 hr flight from Wall to Mitchell was spent in moderate turbulence. I tried several altitudes but there was no relief. Even the airlines were getting light chop at all altitudes. Joel says that the stop at Wall Drug was the highlight of the day. He had seen signs in the Black Hills mentioning "Jackalopes" but had never seen one until today. The big Tyrannosaurus Rex
got his attention too. I think he also liked the games and the atmosphere there. We landed in Mitchell at about 1 PM in crosswinds (270 on runway 300) of 35 gusts to 45. It took me an extra 1500 feet to get the Coupe down safely, but she handled it with no problem. The bad part was that as I was trying to get the canopy cover installed in those gusty winds, I partially lost my balance and leaned my elbow on the side window hard enough to put a big crack in it. So first order of business tomorrow AM is to find out if it is fixed, or if I have to get busy and fix it. We managed to surprise my high school buddy, and had a great time talking over dinner. We also drove to Charles Mix County, where I spent most of my youth, and I showed Joel where I had attended school, lived and worked. We had a nice visit with Uncle Wayne too before we headed back to Mitchell.
