Coupers; We had a nice day for departing Wisconsin, cool and clear with a 8 to 10 Mph wind out of the NW. We took off from an 1100 foot wet grass strip (WI62) and flew to Milwaukee north to get fuel. It was $2.70 per gallon, and to top everything off, the line boy put the RH fuel cap on backwards, and I didn't catch it until after take off. The cap was on straight fore and aft
and I was in a hurry, so I didn't look very close. That meant a landing in Racine in order to straighten out the cap. We then flew down the West coast of Lake Michigan, under the Chicago TCA, to Gary, IN. Then we climbed up to 5500 feet and headed east. After a fuel stop, we ended up climbing to 9500 feet to stay in calm air above the growing clouds. I decided to call it a day when we could no longer stay clear of the clouds at 9500 feet. We landed in Cambridge, OH. The folks are very friendly, and we only have 260 miles left to go in the AM to get to College Park. By not getting airborne until almost 8 AM, and losing an hour crossing back into Eastern Daylight Time, we stopped about 2:30 PM. Fortunately, we had a little tailwind and were able to move along at over 130 mph grounds speed. I noticed that the trip average is now back up over 97 mph again. I forgot the total distance, but will write it all down tomorrow. I know we are over 7200 miles so far. Joel was absolutely amazed at the size of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. This visibility was over 30 miles, which made the trip along the Chicago shoreline quite an experience.
