It sounds like there are a lot of small bricks.

* Wheel pants are a maintenance nuisance as well as adding weight. I'm
not sure if anyone on the list can actually document an increase in
speed.

* The autopilot is unusual in a plane like an Alon, but I'm sure you
don't want to remove it. I'd guess it was around 3 lbs.

* There's nothing wrong with a working KX-170b, but you could save 4-5
lbs with a more modern navcom.

* You'll probably remove the loran once you try a moving map GPS and
you'd save another 2 lbs.

* Don't sweat the horizon. I removed mine to weigh it and even though
large, the difference between it and a new smaller one is around 1/2 lb.
I left it in because an instrument shop says they were WWII surplus and
really well built - as long as they keep working, no sweat!

In short, avionics could possibly shave 10 lbs off the weight. I don't
know what pants and hardware weigh. Maybe 8-10 lbs. It sounds like the
weighing might have been done incorrectly or there was fuel (30 lbs) in
the fuselage tank. If all the above were true, you would lose 50lbs and
be around 975-985 lbs, which is typical for an Alon.
