For 2 years now I have had my static line on the airspeed indicator
unhooked
due to very low airspeed reading when it was connected. In the early days
I
crawled all over the static lines looking for leaks. At my recent annual
my
mechanic hooked up the static and once again I was cruising at 80 and
stalling at 30 indicated. After telling him that I would have to
disconnect
the static to get halfway accurate readings, he told me that the static
side
was being pressurized somehow. If the pitot is not pointing exactly
straight
air can blow into the static holes. Anyway, to make a long story long, he
showed me his 1927 Rearwin which has the same exact pitot as the coupe
except
it came from the factory with a little disc with a set screw just before
the
static holes. This forces the air around the static holes. I picked up a
1/2
"shaft collar, drilled it out to 9/16 and slipped it on the pitot. Guess
what?
It works! My indicated speeds are now by the book. After being frustrated
for
2 years it is amazing how simple the fix can be. Jack r
