The serious type of corrosion is intergrannular. Untouched it appears as
a
bubble on top of the aluminum structure. When covered with dirt and
grime,
the rise in the metal can be very difficult to detect with lights and a
mirrors. When you penetrate the raised bubble with a knife or pick, the
surface shreds a bit and inside the bubble is white powder. It's found on
the upper and lower spar caps of the wing. The spar caps of the center
section can have delamination corrosion on the spar caps just above or
below
the wing attach fittings. The caps are aluminum, the fittings are steel
so
dissimilar metal corrosion can develop and can become quite serious here.
The bottom of the center section spar can also develop corrosion. Surface
corrosion appears as a white powder on the surface of the aluminum and
usually does not involve destruction that can't be treated. I have seen,
however, where this type of corrosion when left untreated has completely
eaten away sections of wing rib structure.
