An aircraft that is not kept clean & waxed will display a form of parasite drag called "skin friction drag" which is basically roughness of the airplane's surfaces. Even though the surfaces may appear smooth, magnified they may be quite rough. A thin layer of air clings to these rough surfaces & creates small eddies which contribute to drag. The combined effect of all parasite drag varies proportionately to the square of the airspeed. So get waxing!
