I was wondering if there was any still configured like that.  Mine has
been
changed to a manual control.  My manual control allowed me to enrich the
mixture once when the engine quit. Gave me enough power to get back to the
airport.  There's a plus.

You may have touched on the one of the reasons your engine made it to TBO
and beyond.  If you pull the power back and the carb heat comes on, you
can't super cool the engine.  The carb heat will keep the temp up and
prevent the damage that come with super cooling.  (That's just theory, it
hasn't been proven on actual laboratory animals or lower life forms, such
as Cessna pilots.)  I would recommend that, if you do remove the original
controls and go to the manual system, you pull carb heat on during high
level descents without power.
