The CD model only exists because ERCO felt the handling of the D model was too fast on approach. (From Ercoupe Information Letter No. 1, Jan 1, 1956 "In the opinion of the factory, this limitation (9 degree up limit) seriously affected the landing qualities of the Ercoupe.) My feeling is if the company that manufactures it does not like it, it might be worth avoiding. That said, the only difference between a CD and a D is the up elevator travel and the legal max gross. The up elevator has to be limited to keep the airplane stall proof in compliance with its type certificate at the higher weight. Some people have been known to fly C and CD model coupes at higher than 1260 lbs and just avoid the stall. Personally I would either stay with a CD or go with the split elevator.
