----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Thanks one and all for your informative comments on my exploding rivet questions.
I have a broken rivet on a rudder that is difficult to get to without removing the rudder. I had thought that if I could snap the old rivet out with an automatic center punch that one of these old exploding rivets would make an easy repair. However after reading all the negative comments the exploding rivets are out. One of the instructors at my A & P school said to replace the rivet with a screw that it would be perfectly legal. Comments from you A & P's out there? A sheet metal screw? He pointed out that was an AD on one of the Piper products that required rivets to be replaced by screws. I am thinking that I will just go ahead and remove the rudder and replace the broken 3/32 rivet with a 1/8 Cherry rivet. I'll have to drill and countersink, but somehow screws don't seen proper. I'm also going to run this by my I.A. and see what he says.
