Yes Jan you have hit the nail on the head. It will let people fly if they
are fit enough to drive themselves to the airport and some feel that this
is adequate to be able to fly simple aircraft like our Coupes. I for one
think it is a good idea when I hear about the large sums of money and all
the time and grief some of our good friends on this list have to go
through
to get a third class medical.
There are some out there who think it is just a way to let people fly that
have not been trained. I look back on my own training many years ago when
we were taught to fly the aircraft first and then we learned some of the
instrument flying and communication required to fly into big airports. We
soloed in about eight hours and were ready for our cross county flying by
about 20 hours and we did well at this generally. Yes there is much more
to
learn today if you aspire to be an airline Captain some day and I think
that training for the people who wish to do that should be geared to that
goal. I do not think that this is the only goal that student pilots may
have and that their training could well be more in line with the system
that many of us learned under. Learn to fly the aircraft, learn the rules
so that you can stay out of where you do not belong and fly safe.
There are many fine pilots (with advanced licenses) that would like to
come
back to aviation and fly with us to flyins and on weekends who do not need
to have the cost or grief imposed by the system that is geared to produce
new commercial pilots they just want to have some fun flying and to fly
safe.
I hope that some of the negativity we have seen here will look to a little
broader perspective as some day they may not pass their medical, it can
happen.
I would think that a 415-C with a C-75 and a climb prop would meet the
speed requirements but we are still 18 pounds off on the gross weight
issue. That can be solved with an STC to lower the gross weight as
required. Please keep them Coupes light!!
Have a good day.
Best regards,
Vern

I have a friend who is looking into the new sportsman's license. The good
thing is that you dont have to have a medical certificate- but the bad
thing is that the aircraft has to have a max gross weight of only 1235
lbs- a C model doesnt even qualify. Also, our cruise speed is too high.
