That's because some of the new ELTs (finally) use off-the-shelf D-cell batteries, eliminating this stupid process of buying what is (sometimes) just a bunch of penlight cells in a block of resin with a wire soldered on. Also, these new ELTs have some rather nice features. And they are in some cases incredibly cheap. When I look at my old ELT, it strikes me as kind of a chunk of junk, more rigged to not accidentally go off than to go off consistently on impact.
