Bob;    You have the right idea about rebuilding the struts. We found that

using two pipe clamps, and putting a 1 X 4 through each of the top and
bottom 
fittings, you can compress the strut enough to pop the snap ring out of 
place. Once it is loose, you just release the pressure and pull the
assembly 
apart. Reversing the process once the new parts are in place gets the unit

back together.  You will find that after you do 2 or 3, you get quite good
at 
it. >g<
You do not need to take the top apart to put the spacers in, just fasten
them 
in place at the top of the cylinder before putting the outside one, with
the 
doughnuts, back in place.
I believe that the center Bakelite bushing may have to be reamed to fit,
but 
I am not sure of that.
