Here is what I wrote: Subj: Re: [COUPERS] HELP!!! Oleo Strut Leak. . . Date: 10/23/2000 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Main strut is not a strut but simply a shock absorber. The Rubber donuts/or metal disc springs are the suspension units, with the strut simply absorbing the landing forces...slowly. To fill the strut, the plane is jacked up, letting the strut fall ( after removeing the down limit stop. Fill to the filler hole with red Hydraulic fluid.. No way for it to leak out , unless there is a crack or hole in the bottom cylinder. The upper cyl has an "o" ring, and acts as a piston, so when the shock is extended, all oil is in the bottom half. When the cyl is worn so the shock collapses too quickly, a "brake cyl cup" can be attached to the bottom of this cyl ( as was used before S/N 813. If this is done, then brake fluid is used instead of red Hyd fluid.) When the shock is compressed, oil is forced thru small valve openings to the upper cyl; to regulate the collapse of the strut...thus acting as a shock absorber. The shock absorber does not support the a/c, as in an air oil strut, like Piper. The rubber dounuts or the Belleville spring discs (depending on model) do the supporting of the aircraft.
