I went down to OK to get my plane last Wed. in a Bonanza. It took 5 1/2
hours to get there through a thunderstorm. We actually made it without
filing IFR but it was marginal at best. Got to OK at 6:30 PM and met the
AP. He said the plane was annualed and ready to go so I paid him and
went to a motel for the nite. Thursday AM we arrived at the airport at
8:00 to find thick ground fog so we took our time looking over the
plane. All looked good till I turned on the master an had no power to
anything. Some annual huh? I spent the next 5 hours removing the floor
and tracing wires. I foung a broken wire shorted against the fuselage
under the floorboard and repaired it. Have you ever tried to work under
the dash of an Ercoupe? You either go in feet first or head first
depending on where you are working. I discovered something
new...........Erobics! I still had no radios or Loran or transponder,
After further checking I found the battery was installed backwards and
the poles reversed. Fixed that and bingo I had radio, intercom and
transponder. The Loran however is shot. Lucky I had a hand held GPS.
Took off at 3:00 PM and got to Missiissippi at dark stayed the nite. Got
up to fog again. The fog never went away and then level 3 &4 T-storms
rolled in. Flew commercial to Orlando for the weekend. It is still
raining in Miss. so we came back to NJ without the plane. We will try
again on Friday. I also left all my keys to my car, office and home in
the plane. On a good note the plane flys great and I love flying it.
