A radio station license is no longer required for flight within the United States. I believe you may need it to fly into Canada. The transponder requires a VFR check every 24 months to be legal. My last one took an hour and cost $75. Be careful. Previously I was given IFR checks at $125 without realizing I could go with the cheaper VFR check.
