When, A few year back, a couple of younger fellow had bought an Ercoupe to learn to fly in. Looking to learn as fast and cheap as possible they ask if I would fly with them. Sure, I love flying. We made an understanding. I am PIC. The first time we were going to fly 99371 I watch the walk around. When he was done I had a few pointers for him. One was that they had not been shown how to check the wings by their instructor nor check the underside skins. I was shocked when lifting the wing the first time to hear that clunk sound. So were they. We walked over to 3800H I pushed and pulled an no sound or movement. They got the Idea quickly. Dad had always stress, stress the wing to check for broken ribs or spars.(of course that was wood an fabric wings) But it still carries over to metal wing also. It should be part of your walk around. Lift the aircraft off the ground by the wing tip is not a good idea. Ercoupe had a note on that, I read some where. just a little stress goes a long way. With metal wing you may hear oil canning. do check it out. Just to be safe. Also, with restrain do your vertical fin to check for spar movement in the horizontal. >DO NOT< over stress the vertical fin. I have oil canning in the right side of 5644F horizontal. so much now I will not fly her until is comes apart for inspection. A cracked spar could make for a bad day.
