I strongly recommend everyone read the chapter in the back of "Stick and Rudder" about flying high. He covers it all.
Summary: if you can get high in a timely manner, high pays you back by allowing higher speed cruise at much reduced fuel burn. Example: Iowa City, Iowa to Chester, Connecticut with only two fuel stops.
