Hi Everyone I'm asking for advise to pass along to my mechanic concerning an apparent overly rich condition on my Coupe with an 0-200.
When the annual was done about a month ago, my mechanic noticed the mixture control on the carb did not go to the "full rich" stop when the mixture control(vernier) was pushed all the way in. He re-adjusted the cable so that the control arm on the carb now hits the stop in the full rich setting as it should. Seemed ........"odd" the mixture control just happened to come from the previous owner in this somewhat leaned position. Since this was corrected, the engine seems to run extremely rich, not as smooth, and the pipe appears very black and sooty. Last night on climb out the engine started to miss a little bit so I pulled on carb heat assuming I had some ice as we all now is common with an 0-200. The RPMs dropped significantly and did not come back and the engine started running VERY rough. My buddy was following me in his C-150 and said I had a very visible black trail coming from my exhaust. I made an uneventful precautionary landing back at the field. After landing, I run the engine up to 1700 RPMs and checked the mags, no problem. I pulled the carb heat at 1700 RPMs, no problem. I applied full power and pulled the carb heat and the engine almost immediately started sputtering and running very rough. I leaned the mixture and the engine immediately smoothed out. I returned the control to full rich, the engine once again ran rough. I have a new muffler and headers so I'm sure I'm not sucking raw exhaust from the heat muff into the carb with the application of carb heat (had that problem once with a broken muffler and it ran rough at all RPM settings). My mechanic replaced the air filter at annual so I'm pretty certain the intake is not restricted. My friend with the 150 is running the same auto fuel from the same station as I am and his exhaust runs very clean compared to mine even though both birds have 0-200s. As I mentioned before, since correcting the control setting the engine just hasn't quite felt right. Last night was the worse ever and obviously unnacceptable. My mechanic is going to have a look and is thinking maybe a loose venture or bad float. Has anyone else had this experience or is there any useful input I could pass along? Thanks In Advance for Everyone's Help, This Group Has Been Great. Roger 99399
