I don't know about the searching and indexing problems, but I agree with you that it's nice to have descriptive subject lines. I notice on Usenet that lots of new postings have subject lines such as "Question from a newbie" and "Help needed!!!" It's kind of a pain because you have to open the message to see what it's about, and 9 out of 10 times it's something I have no interest in. I might have done it myself a few times.
