One way to consider the whole matter of turning back versus landing
straight
ahead
is to ask yourself the question: Will your aircraft climb steeper than it
glides?
Unless the answer is definitely yes, you can never return to your
departure
point.
In addition to that you must subtract the altitude lost in the turn about.
Headwind/Tailwind may help some, but not enough, I would think in most
situations.
