Wow, you are a loyal bunch. For those that wondered I am a 40 something that has flown R/C on and off since 13. Started in free flight at about first grade. I have always wanted to build a plane so I started taking flying lessons and ordered a set of plans and the wood for a Pietenpol. I figure that little project should take about 5 years or so. My checkride should be early in July and I will finish the training in a 150.
I do want to buy a plane to build hours for the next few years. The basic list of options is C140, C150, Grumman AA1-A or B, Ercoupe. The plane will probably live outdoors due to a lack of hanger space at most of the local airports. I know that renting is cheaper than buying but it is a lot less convienient when my father and I want to go to my brother's place in Maryland to go fishing. It is only 400 miles or so... If I am careful on shopping I should be able to fly for 5 years and sell the plane for what I pay for it. That way I will be out the annuals, what breaks, and gas. My upper limit will be about $17,000 and I would prefer a lot less than that. All of the planes that I have listed are in that range. The coupe is still on the list. The trick to the game is to find a plane in the northeast (Rochester, NY area) that is in good shape and at the right price. Thanks for the responses.
