INFAMOUS CARB DRIP -- just jogged my memory! I have seen no AD on this, but there is one for Mooneys, I'm told. Read on...
Shutting off the fuel to the carb is a standard practice for me. OTHERWISE, I ruin a nose wheel tire. The dripping gas gets on the nose tire causing it to SWELL in spots. (Maybe some SHIMMY PROBLEMS are caused by this?) After a hundred shutoff cycles or so, it seemed the valve would NO LONGER cut the fuel off COMPLETELY via evidence of fuel pooled around the tire on the next visit. Impossible?!?!?!?! Taking the valve apart (drain gas from header tank first), all LOOKED well, but really NOT so. We all know that gas can leak thru the smallest crack, RIGHT? Well, no matter how well lapped or tight the valve is, gas CAN and WILL DRIP thru a PERFECTLY GOOD VALVE in the OFF POSITION !!!!! The fix is..... a SPECIAL VALVE GREASE that is impervious to fuel! I'm told Mooneys require RE-GREASING fuel valves on a regular basis. (Every 50 hours?) TWO shop AI's that I know are TOTALLY UNAWARE of greasing fuel valves or the special grease. Looking around their shops..... I found the valve grease on the premises. Somebody in years gone by, knew about it! Now YOU AND I do too! <g> No question.... we have the SAME NEED. The header tank valve can only be cycled so many times before there is insufficient grease to hold a PERFECT SEAL.
