This sounds very similar to problem i had with Windows CE 2004/2005 (ipaq) 
mail reader. After few debugging sessions i discovered that ipaq windows mail 
reader don't like uid mangling which courier do - creating uid's db with old 
format and then upgrading it to newer. I did make patch to create uid db file 
in new format always, and that solved all problems. Search archives for 
patch.
