That depends. I've had many tens of thousands of POP3 users running on a cluster using courier's POP3 daemon and a NetApp NFS filer backend, but very few users were using IMAP. Some people on the list have reported problems with IMAP when only 5 or 6 clients are concurrently connected. Although I've tried to give some handholding on the list with strace and tcpdump, they haven't reported back usefully what's going on (either what IMAP commands the clients are issuing when the load goes through the roof, or what the imapd process is doing) OTOH there are people on this list running much more than that successfully. So for IMAP you may have to experiment a bit, e.g. disabling FAM/GAMIN when using an NFS backend, to get the best performance.
