I'm trying to run courier-imap on Kubuntu Edgy using the Kubunu packages.

If I install the package, then create an account in KMail, if I try to look at the inbox I get the following error in the mail.log:

Please file a bug with Kubuntu. There are a number of configuration optins to choose from when install Courier-IMAP, so unless you know exactly how the Kubuntu version of the package was configured, these kinds of things are impossible to figure out.

Unless you've built Courier-IMAP yourself, it is always best to report the bug to your vendor's distribution. If there's a problem that needs to be addressed, they can kick the issue over, themselves.

If I create the directory "Maildir" under the user directory, and I try to

Maildir is not an ordinary directory, but a maildir. Again, please file a bug with Kubuntu.

access the IMAP inbox, I now get this error in the log:

This is normal, when you do not have shared folders configured.
