Yes - ask on the list of MTA you use to deliver mail to the box (postfix or 
whatever it is) if it's possible to create maildir on first mail delivery.
Or write a script yourself to create homedirs by dumping ldap search 
results, say nightly.
Most standard linux distros will also create homedir (with /etc/skel) on 
users first ssh login - maybe you could use it somehow.
