Hi, I am using Courier as IMAP server and Evolution as IMAP client.
Some time ago I copied a mail from another mailbox to my mailbox and from that point on, I wasn't able to receive mails anymore because of an error in Evolution. The cause of this problem was that Courier was telling Evolution that the message x exists, although Evolution couldn't open that mail. I bugged the Evolution devs about this problem and got this as a reply: "[..the imap spec says that..] imap servers are not allowed to tell a client that a message exists if the server cannot open the message." So I'd like to encourage you to fix this. If you need more information, just ask.
