My wonderful wife, who like many spouses isn't a computer expert,
tried (on her Mac, using the Mac mail client) to create a mailbox to
hold questions. She gave it the name "XXXX ?" for some value of
XXXX. Then she started dragging and dropping messages into the box,
something she'd done with other boxes before.

However, when she tried to retrieve the messages they didn't show up.
Instead, she got odd error messages (which unfortunately I didn't
record).

After poking around a bit, I found that the messages were in the
correct maildir on the server, ".XXXX ?". Naturally, I was suspicious
of the wildcard character. So I had her rename the box on the Mac to
"XXXX Qs", and by hand on the server side I did the equivalent rename.
Bingo, everything worked again.

So: has anybody else had a problem with creating a sub-folder that
contained a wildcard? Is this a bug in Courier, or in the Mac mail
reader?

Software, like bridges, should be elegant and visually pleasing as
well as functional. Ugly constructs, designs, and languages should be
avoided like the plague.
