I have a situation where I'd like courier to support logins in the format
of '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' as an alternative to just using 'user' for a short list
of
domains. I'm not looking for a fully virtual setup and really just need
the @domain part (if present) to be stripped from the username it passes
along authpam if it matches a specific domain.

There is no way to do it with authpam directly. You'll need to hack your own authentication module, using authcustom.
