Sam, that was it!  It compiled beautifully... btw, here was my configure
string for Solaris 10, if anyone else comes across this:

./configure CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/ssl/include"
LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/ssl/lib -R/usr/local/ssl/lib"  --without-ipv6
--with-waitfunc=wait3
