There's nothing wrong with stuff that has not been updated for a while.The Linux kernel's inotify API has not changed in, what, decades? Unless the existing gamin code needs to be fixed in order to be compiled by a newer gcc, which for a C program might happen once or twice this century, there's no reason to update it.
fam was the original library that provided this service, supported NFS, and was cross-platform. But it was very finicky. gamin was created to be API- compatible with fam, and simply use the native Linux API; on Linux it's the best option.
