I use the '@' sign. I haven't heard any complaints yet, but then again I don't have many users either. OTOH, for similar problems in the past I've simply explained to people where the problem lies (it's almost always with broken software on the users' end) and offered them a list of free alternatives to what they're currently using. I've found that if you're honest and sincere, most people will be reasonable and upgrade to something compatible. When confronted with the occasional protest, I simply tell the person there is nothing I can do, and that if they want something other than what I'm providing they'll have to go elsewhere.
