mail (and Mail which is a symlink) does not know anything about mime, the only 'functionality' is wrapping the generated headers after 72 characters and some checks if the connection is above or below 1200bps... (current FreeBSD) Its basically the same as of 6/6/93, and the first draft about mime (rfc 1521) was published a few months later.
