All,
I admit that I didn't fully understand the directions on how to set up
the db, but I've since reread and gone through the whole set up again:

creating a new user, 'vmail' with user and group id's.
creating the userdb (with perm 700) with just user vmail in it
creating /opt/imap/folders/<usernames> under vmail's home
(/opt/imap/folders/).
putting entries into the userdb file with
    the mail username
    the vmail user/group/home data
the particular directory for the user.
then remaking the userdb.

But I'm still getting the same error. I can't see anything that applies
specifically to this creation process in the maildirmake man pages, nor to
this particular problem... Can anyone help?
