FInally found a list of IMAP commands....

Tried this:

CAPABILITY
* CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 NAMESPACE AUTH=CRAM-MD5 AUTH=CRAM-SHA1 CHILDREN IDLE
SORT THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THREAD=REFERENCES STARTTLS
CAPABILITY OK CAPABILITY completed


And was able to log in to a virtual mailbox I made according to
http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/INSTALL.html

But I set up PAM in the authentication modules - shouldn't that allow me to
log in as one of the normal un*x users?  What did I miss?
