Notice I get a FAIL without userdbshadow.dat ever being consulted. Is this
my fault? Have I mis-configured something? Any response, just about, would
be better than what I've received so far.

/usr/local/etc/courier-imap/authdaemonrc contains:
authmodulelist="authuserdb"

/usr/local/etc/courier-imap/pop3d contains:
AUTHMODULES="authdaemon"

Subject: Cannot authenticate; userdb/authdaemond/FreeBSD

FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE
Courier-IMAP 1.3.12

Although I may think I have everything configured correctly, I do not!

/usr/local/etc/userdb:
vmail
uid=61|gid=71|home=/web/mail|shell=/sbin/nologin|systempw=*|gecos=Virtual
Mail User
61=     vmail
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
uid=61|gid=71|home=/web/mail|mail=/web/mail/test|shell=/bin/bash|systempw=[1
3charstring-letters&numbers]

authdaemonrc:
authmodulelist="authuserdb"

ktrace indicates, at least, that userdb.dat is being consulted by
authdaemond. I'm trying to authenticate using POP3, but: pop3d-ssl: LOGIN
FAILED

I generate the password by typing in:
userdbpw
 [enter password]
 [and again]
Which displays a crypt of the password which I copy into userdb after
systempw=
Then I run makeuserdb.

I have also tried userdbpw -md5 and repeated the process.

I am at a loss as to why authentication might be failing. I have tried user
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and just user "test."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Yanek.
