I would suggest just compiling in the auth modules that you think that
you would use, for example if you are on a RH Linux box and you plan to use
ldap for lookups and the like that would useful compile in and use
the --with-authmodule or --without-authmodule, a configure --help would
certain provide you with the correct directive to add to the configure
command.
This way you aren't adding useless authmodules that you donot intend to
use. I would suggest that you compile in authpam on a RH box and some other
form of authentication such as LDAP or MySQL/Postgres database servers which
will centralize your servers to a large extent. LDAP is the way to go, which
is purely my opinion.
