Why not just have the app rescan all the folders every X minutes? No mods
to any server software required.
I suggested that last year. Not fast enough, and having now got more experience of the user base, I agree with them! This needs to be realtime, plus or minus about 3 seconds maximum!!! The external suppliers cannot handle an IMAP connection that fast, and they do not want to be scanning so frequently. Nor do I want them scanning everything that frequently as I do not wish to double or triple my IMAP server farm ;-)
Both sylpheed (gtk+ based) and squirrelmail (webmail) do this very well.
sylpheed makes good use of its imap cache, making for very fast rescans.
squirrelmail is somewhat slower, but still nice.
Needs to be network based for redundancy, and scalability. The last time I looked at Squirrel it required local disk access, which is not what we want, or desire.
