I notice that if courier sees multiple MX records for a domain with the same preference, and one of those MX's refuses a connection, courier does not even try the others. This shows up mainly with Hotmail, whose MX list is:
5 mx04.hotmail.com 5 mx05.hotmail.com 5 mx06.hotmail.com 5 mx07.hotmail.com 5 mx08.hotmail.com 5 mx09.hotmail.com 5 mx10.hotmail.com 5 mx11.hotmail.com 5 mx12.hotmail.com 5 mx13.hotmail.com 5 mx14.hotmail.com 5 mx15.hotmail.com 5 mx01.hotmail.com 5 mx02.hotmail.com The problem then is that a message for Hotmail will remain in the queue for a potentially long time. Other MTAs like Exim, for example, simply pick another MX and keep trying until one of them accepts the connection.
