Hello,

I have a problem I can reproduce every time where at least one SEARCH
command makes Courier-IMAP disconnect from the client with no warning.
There is apparently nothing logged when this happens. The problem only
occurs when there are messages with certain characters in the headers. I
have observed it with apparent big5 encoding in the Subject: line, as well
as messages with 8-bit characters (i.e. characters > 127) in the From: or
To: lines.

The host system is Linux, running Courier-IMAP 1.4.4. This problem existed
in my previous Courier version, too, something from last fall.

To test, I took a problem message and put it in a mailbox called Bogus.
This is the only message in the mailbox. Then, I manually executed the
following sequence:

root@imap:~# telnet localhost imap2
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.

The problem message had the subject line:
Subject: =?big5?B?q0ggrUMgPyChQCC7WCCsQCCxzw==?=

When I changed this to Subject: nothing the problem went away.

Sam, can you give me any help on this? One of the clients my users use does
a UID SEARCH as part of changing to a new folder. This results in these
folders being inaccessible if there's any message in there with illegal
characters. I agree that the characters shouldn't be there, but once
they're there I can't let them make my users' email inaccessible.

Thanks very much,
Jeff
