care to give more details? What version of Courier-Imap are you using? Operating System? Tried other authentication modules?
Since some version (I dont know xactly) all Authentication is handled through authdaemond. If you have Debian Potato I can tell you it works if you just do apt-get install courier-imap and then tell it to use auth_pam (or so). Have tried that. Though I wont go without SSL support and the potato version has only ssl support over stunnel and I spent hours to get it work - to no success. So I migrated to woody (Debian 3.0) and tataa everything works fine!
