While on long drives last weekend I did some thinking. I have just built a
new linux mail server using Postfix-MySQL-Courier-imap. I would like to be
able to restrict access to imap services to only particular users. It was
apparent last week from several other messages on this list that there is
currently no built in functionality for selectively granting imap
privileges and was thinking there must be some other way to do this, other
than a suggested method of running two instances of courier-imap.

Sitting in my car it occurred to me that I might be able to assign imap
services to a different port, thus hiding it from where a pop-only,
non-imap-authorized user would find it. Authorized users would be told to
use an 'alternative' port to access imap. Once I got back to the office I
looked at my mail client to see what configuration options were available
to users and was disappointed to see that there was no port setting (Mac
Eudora).

So, hiding it behind an alternative port may not work. But is the idea of
hiding it (somehow) from non-authorized users do-able? If not by port,
maybe some other sort of obfuscation?

TIA

Rob
