Hi,
Following up from my previous email, I've done a bit of investigation
to try and find out why I get a Syntax Error when getting fetchmail
to deliver mail to the courier SMTP daemon.
Looking at the mail log when mail is delivered, I get the following:
courieresmtpd: started,ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1]
courieresmtpd: error,relay=::ffff:127.0.0.1,
from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
to=<sam@localhost>: 513 Syntax error.
courieresmtpd: started,ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1]
courieresmtpd: error,relay=::ffff:127.0.0.1,
from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: 513 Relaying denied.
courieresmtpd: error,relay=::ffff:127.0.0.1,
from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
to=<sam@localhost>: 513 Syntax error.
Is there a way of switching on more debug in courieresmptd? Or
is the reason 'obvious' from the information above?
The email was sent from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to
samuel.penn@cablemodem[1]. The mail is downloaded from NTL's
POP3 server (by fetchmail), and forwarded to ESMTPD, presumably
to the user sam@localhost. At this point I get the syntax error.
I'm not sure why it's trying to relay to sam@bifrost, unless
it's trying to send an error back to the original sender.
I can get fetchmail to rewrite the recipient, but this doesn't
appear to have any effect, except that sam@localhost becomes
sam@wotan or [EMAIL PROTECTED] (wotan being the name of the server).
Looking at what's going on with tcpdump, the Syntax error is
occuring right after the "RCPT.TO:<sam@localhost>". Neither
the mail body, nor the rest of the headers, are being sent.
[1] Which I'd prefer not to give out, since it gets zero spam.
Actually, it's a bit more complicated, since the mail originally
goes to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (also getting zero spam), hits an
MS Exchange server, which forwards a copy to the cable modem
account.

Be seeing you,
Sam.
