\Recent is an IMAP-specific curiosity.

The IMAP server sets \Recent for any message it has never seen before, and 
must assign a new UID.

It's up to the client.  There is some semantical difference between mail 
that's newly arrived, and mail that arrived some time ago, but has not been 
read, but this is fine hair-splitting.  But I doubt that many people really 
care.  When a client resynchronizes against a folder, it already knows about 
anything that comes up new, it doesn't need to look at \Recent.

It's one of the peculiarities and nonsensical aspects of the IMAP protocol, 
and I've been flaming the confused individual who wrote it for the last 
three years.  Not because of this particular item, really, but on general 
principles...
