Hi all,

I've encountered a weird problem since changing the POP server for the
ISP I work for. Basically, we have had four clients out of a
significantly large client base lose the ability to pop their mail. The
problem exists when the client goes to authenticate to check mail -
Outlook Express returns a timeout error after 60 seconds (default
behaviour). This response isn't elicited when either telnetting in and
issuing raw POP commands, or using another email client (ie. Eudora 5.1)
from the -same machine-.

One such machine (which we have obtained from our client for testing
purposes) has a fresh install of Windows 2000, and at the start had a
new copy of Internet Explorer/Outlook Express 5.0. After the fault
appeared, the machine was upgraded to IE/OE 5.5 SP2, which didn't fix
it. A further upgrade to IE6 did not help either. This was tested on
both the local lan that the mail server was on, as well as over a
dial-up connection.

The tricky thing here is that OE -can successfully- pop mail from other
pop servers, including the old mail server, and other pop servers on the
same lan (running various pop daemons including ipop3d, cucipop etc),
just not the server running courier. To prove that there was no
individual account setup flaws, a previously working account was
modified so that only the server-name was changed to point to the server
running courier.

Debugs of the Outlook Express pop session show no response after issuing
the PASS command.

Relevant information:

Server:

courier ver blah blah

Clients:

Windows 2000 SP2 running Internet Explorer/Outlook Express
5.50.4807.2300 SP2

Windows 2000 SP2 running Internet Explorer/Outlook Express 6.0.2600.0000

Windows 98SE running Internet Explorer/Outlook Express 5.50.4807.2300
SP2

What I don't get is the difference between the four installs of IE/OE
here, and the tens of thousands of our other clients who run IE/OE and
have no troubles at all.

Any ideas (don't say "reinstall windows" :) would be gratefully
received.

Regards,

justaan.
